Why We Like The Trace MIPS Helmet
Smith's road helmet lineup has never been one to disappoint, and this year is no different, with the bar being moved a little higher once again with a new helmet in the mix — the Trace MIPS Helmet. This pinnacle helmet in the road collection features all of the tech you would expect from Smith, like its Koroud protection that fully surrounds the helmet to provide next-level protection, while teaming up with internal air channels so intake as much air, and keep your scalp feeling cool when you're challenging yourself up new climbs, and soaring down canyon roads. The Trace features 18 large vents that are strategically placed to create an intake and exhaust system, pulling cool air in, and giving it a quick escape in the back. And because those long rides also mean varying lighting conditions, Smith builds the Trace with an AirEvac system that works to keep your shades fog-free while riding, and vents that neatly secure your glasses when you need to take them off after dusk falls.

Solid Helmet
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
Have had this helmet for over 6 months. Have used on road and mountain bike rides and races. Good fit, comfortable, fairly light. If you’re wondering, you can still stow your riding glasses in the helmet with the honeycomb padding.

This helmet did its job but...
I bought this helmet in March and was very happy with the fit and airflow. I had a bad crash yesterday when another rider fell in front of me. I went over him hitting the pavement with the front left of the helmet. This helmet did its job and took the brunt of the damage. Unfortunately the impact pushed the thin MIPS plastic into my temple leaving a gash that required eleven stitches. I would definitely take the stitches over a traumatic brain injury but it would seem that there could be something to make that edge less exposed.

Meh
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Pretty pricey, though it does fit well. The biggest issue is how hot it gets. Never had a helmet that trapped heat like this one. All those Koroyd may be safer, but it comes at a price. Ended up going with a Giro helmet that fits better, is cooler, and feels better made. Smith nailed the looks on this one, but not the functionality.

Protect you noggin!
I refuse to buy a helmet without the MIPS technology. You only get one brain. I will protect it as much as I can. The last thing you want to be worrying about while riding next to a bunch of cars going 25+ MPH, will my helmet protect me if I took a hit, or fall. So if a helmet offers better protection like MIPS...Just pay the extra amount for it! Trace?s AirEvac system relieves hot air that builds up on your eye wear to prevent fogging. Eyewear storage is made easy by channels on the side of the helmet that hold your eyewear in place for those grueling climbs.

Excellent helmet (still un-crashed)
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
While the real reason to buy this helmet is for the superior crash protection and I cannot comment as I have not crashed, I can say after nearly 8-9k miles of use, this helmet is very comfortable. The adjustments are good enough I can easily put a GoPro up top too for those fun descents. Having eyeglass holders integrated is a key for me too as I almost always remove glasses mid-ride. Listen to the podcast on Velonews about how important MIIPS is for crash protection. I love this helmet and definitely recommend to others.
