Humble Yet Capable

- I've put it through the wringer
Shimano's RT86 "Ice Tech" line might get most of the attention, but their ancestral RT76s still get the job done. RT76s aren't quite as light because only the carrier is aluminum; the rotor is good ol' reliable steel. The upside of this is that RT76s tend to last longer and hold up to abuse better as compared to the aluminum-and-steel sandwich offered in the RT86s. The RT76s are also more forgiving of brake pad material (resin, ceramic or sintered metallic). Can't go wrong with either, but if price and versatility are your top concerns, the RT76 might be your best option.

For touring, bigger is better!

Increasing the rotor size from 160 to 180mm was the right choice for loaded touring on highways and trails. I appreciate the control and added surface area that this larger disc provides. An adapter is required when upsizing and Backcountry sells the adapter too.
