Why We Like The Mescalito TRK GTX Hiking Boot
When scrolling through the trail map app, we don't pick the easy ones. We go for the longest, most strenuous hikes to awe-inspiring locations. That's why we choose the Mescalito TRK GTX Hiking Boot to get us there. The burly leather upper prevents rolled ankles, while a GORE-TEX membrane lets us know our feet will stay dry when crossing rapid rivers. Meanwhile, it sandwiches an Ortholite footbed, PU midsole, and Vibram rubber sole together for sustained comfort and grip throughout.

Out-of-the-Box Comfort, Support, Rugged
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
Had experienced the need for break-in with boots touted for "out-of-the-box" comfort in past. As supportive (needfully slightly stiff) as the Mescalito TRK are, I was pleasantly surprised by the sustained comfort at initial wearings. I seem to have stumbled into shoes and boots that are perfect for less than perfect feet. For the record, I am 6' tall, 155 lbs. and 71 years old. I only look at shoes or boots with lacing to the toe to accommodate inflammation in mid-foot joints. Lacing is snug in forefoot, more open midfoot and snug again over the ankle. Back when foot width was assigned a letter, I was a "C". I think the boot "fill" would not work as well as it does without the taller than normal midfoot area. Scarpa fit has been on my radar screen since my first pair of Zen Pro Approach Shoes years ago. The Mescalito lineup of shoe, mid boot and trekking boot all have that same feel of serious support, especially over the midfoot, and all-day comfort with only a minor penalty for weight. If the Mecalito line last as long as the Zen Pro, that would be something!

Not for my feet
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I wanted to love these boots. I tried them in Patagonia and backpacking in Colorado where I live. They are durable and extremely stiff which is what I wanted. The toe box is tiny and there is a large seam on the heal - both of which caused me to have the worst blisters of my life (I have never gotten blisters until these shoes). Most likely my feet, they may or may not work for you.
