Sun runner cap

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

I have used this cap for years. After a lifetime of playing in the mountains I have reached the skin cancer phase of life. I just spent a week in the Tetons and wore the cap constantly. About the only improvement I could offer would be to lengthen the cape some. I have 3 of these caps and wear one anytime I’m in the sun, running , hiking, etc.

Very nice cap

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wore the cap for about 2 hours while strolling the streets on Nassau. This cap with sun skirt fits perfectly and is light, comfortable to wear & keeps the sun off. The fit is consistent with the size chart (which is not always the case). The game changer for me is the chin cord which keeps the skirt in place. I have other caps with a skirt but when the wind blows the skirt blows off my neck rendering it useless. Not this cap. I bought a second cap which is the biggest endorsement that I can give this item. The colors are Zinger (not a bad color at the sales price) and Khaki.

Outstanding multi-purpose hat

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I have tried other "caped" hats for hiking and fishing. The others I have tried included the cape as part of the hat, and while it could be tucked inside on one version, I found it to be too hot when the cape was inside the hat, in essence adding a second layer on top of your head. Okay for cooler weather, but not for warm/ hot sunny days. My chief complaint about the other hats was with the cape attached, the cape was too close to the neck, ears and face resulting in heat build-up, annoying brushing sounds of the material next to your ear, as well as muffled hearing from the material resting directly over the ear, and a reduced field of vision. The Outdoor Research Sun Runner really addresses all of the problems satisfactorily. The cape is removable so you just have a hat when you need just a hat. When you need the added sun protection, the cape take less than 30 seconds to install and is secure. I like the chin strap which helps keep the cape away from your face thus not obstructing vision as badly. With the cape attached, it does not slide down from the hat or your head, like other "add-on" sun capes. The sun cape also sits a little further away from the ears and neck than the previous model I owned, reducing the heat buildup, unwanted brushing sound on ears and muffled hearing. The hat ialso includes mesh vents for releasing heat from the crown of your head. This hat is versatile, well made and a definite winner!

Practical and oddly stylish

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I've used this Sun Runner hat on hikes and backpacking trips and I love the sun protection coverage it provides. For backpacking, I prefer these to wide-brimmed hats as those tend to continually brush up against the top/brain of my pack. I would have preferred if the bill was slightly longer, but I have no regrets about this purchase and will be using it for many miles to come.

Totally Rad Sun Protection!

Familiarity:
I've put it through the wringer

Got me through a 12-mile hike in Pinnacles in 110 degree weather, as well as 5 NPs in Utah in Aug. No sunburn and dramatically improved my life in those temperatures. My wife thinks I look like a dork in this hat but I think it looks rad! For those of you that have small heads and never look good in hats, this one fits great. Rock this hat with confidence! Everyone else on the trail has no clue what they are missing out on?

1st choice for a paddle hat!

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Was specifically in need of some lightweight sun protection for this ol' hippies chicken butt when enjoyin' one on a cool Montana river. I am not a cap wearer; more a welders bandana fella. I'm fond of this detachable neck shade. Too much sun makes a redneck even redder! Hiked into old mine ruins in the Elkhorns through "occasional showers" and regretted leaving sun shade at home, and glad to be a cap wearer. This is gonna rock on the Blackfoots high water this month! Think I'll attach some flotation to the sun shroud tether...
