Why We Like The Astroman Sun Hoodie

Although it is named after the famous climb in Yosemite, Outdoor Research’s Astroman Sun Hoodie can be worn off the mountain. We wear it for sun protection while paddling along the river, hiking in the vast desert, or backpacking near jagged mountain peaks. This versatile jacket is a staple in our pack for all our trips.

The best Sun Hoodie Money can buy

This sun hoody is one of my favorite pieces of gear- I have 3 that I rotate. They are lightweight, wick moisture, and block the wind (to an extent) that makes the sun hoody quite comfortable. It is a good size/thickness that does not feel warm or snug on the body- I've warn this in 105+ degree heat, and was glad I had it on. I wish it was a bit more durable, but it's durability is already better than other sun hoodies.

Nice hoodie for sunny/hot conditions

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I like the fabric, keeps me cool and dry in hot summer days. Zipper is great for controlling body heat when active. Overall very glad I bought it. Odor control underperforms compared to some of my other gear.

New fav

New favorite sun hoodie. The material is light, unrestrictive, and durable. I ordered a size up to accommodate my build, which provided a more relaxed, less technical fit for coastal use. The zip neck is a welcome addition, allowing for increased ventilation. Couldn't be more pleased.

My new favorite!

I have been wearing the OR "Echo" sunshine as my primary hiking shirt for the past 5 years. I loved it (still do) but ultimately decided I wanted to try something with better SPF protection. After seeing so many positive reviews for the Astroman I decided to give it a try. My biggest concern was that it wouldn't breathe as well as my Echo and make me hot and clay. But it absolutely doesn't! It has great breathability and the fabric is silky smooth against my skin. Although I haven't had it long enough to determine its long-term durability, it seems like it should be at least as good as my Echo (which lasted my whole PCT thru-hike). Currently planning to but a second Astroman. I've learned the hard way that if I find a product you really love I should buy two!

Size has slightly changed since last model

I bought the exact same hoodie and size in 2022. I snagged another because I love it and wanted two to swap on trips. The r2023 model is slightly smaller. It's not a deal breaker but I liked the 2022 sizing so much as it was just big enough to be loose on me but small enough to look sharp. I'm disappointed but still love the hoodie!

Excellent for hot days

Absolutely love this sun shirt! The deep zipper is great for venting heat and the thumb loops help keep the sleeves extended when wearing under another layer when it gets chilly. Also it packs down into its own chest pocket so it takes up very little space in your pack. Very well designed product!
