The Mammut Meron IN Hooded Down Jacket brings a lot of warmth and little weight to the high altitudes of our mountaineering missions and trekking trips. It boasts one of the the highest fill ratings around for incredible loft that warms us up without weighing us down. Not a box-wall if you thought it is
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
The description did not say it is however it does not make it better if you were thinking about bomber warm jacket. Insulation is stuffed in pockets with stitches going thru. I`m still keeping it because I have a good TNF box-walled down vest and another lighter stitch-thru hoodless Marmot jacket. This will work for me actually perfectly better than the one bomber-warm piece because it gives better layering management option. Also you may run into a scenario when you need to share a piece with someone. Otherwise it is very lightweight about 1 lb, well made and comfortable (I had one size up from my T-shirt), covers the butt which I prefer, and packs very small. The chest is slightly over larger in volume (for me in the case of layering it is a good thing). The outside fabric is thin and it doesn't look like it could take much abuse (don`t get hooked while squeezing between airplane seats).

Mammut Meron IN
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
This review is for the older version of this jacket. The older version had 105 g of down, the new version has 140 g of down. The other features look to be identical. GOOD: waist cinch, hood cinch, inner pocket, elastic sleeve cuffs- all features are there. Meron has more loft and warmth than popular 3-season puffies (Cerium LT, Patagonia Down Jacket, etc). Loft is comparable to FF Eos. Euro cut is good for slim folks like myself; the Meron fits trimmer in size L than Cerium LT. Plenty of length in sleeves and body. I typically layer the Meron over base layer, slim-fitting fleece, and Patagonia Houdini (size L) wind jacket. I typically layer the Meron under my Gore-Tex shell. Toray fabric (apparently 7D Toray Airtastic, ~20g/m2, although it is not branded as such) is impressively windproof and water resistant. Airtastic is used in many high-end jackets in a variety of applications. BAD: The 7D Toray fabric is fragile. I've already patched tears due to glissade and zipper snag. The Meron is intended not so much as an everyday, 'daily driver' puffy, but rather a specialized 'above the treeline' piece. The problem is that 105 g of down is more in range with 3 season puffies (like the Eos) and alpine belay parkas typically have more like 150-180 g. The Meron is kind of a tweener that is not quite warm enough as a cold weather stop piece, but too delicate for use as a 3 season puffy. Mammut corrected this by adding more down to the new version. If you buy this jacket, check down distribution first thing. I may have a dud, but the down distribution in my Meron is actually pretty bad in the sleeves. Some chambers are overstuffed and some have barely any down. I have multiple noticeable cold spots in both sleeves. I tried to show this in photos- dark spots have no down. Overall this jacket works for my needs (Cascades summits) but I have some quibbles. Fix the down distribution, swap out Toray for tried and true Pertex (~35 g/m2) and this would be my perfect jacket.

10 stars!!

- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
I've owned many high end down jackets during my adult life and this Mammut is by far the best!! I usually buy size large, however, since it was noted that this jacket ran small I purchased an XL. It fits well and is not too big; I am able to layer it with a base layer and/or a heavy sweatshirt. Very warm and light weight! At my age (71), warmth is more of a factor than fashion when I purchase a jacket. Although the Backcountry rep suggested other jackets, I decided on this one. Up until today, April 12, 2020, I have worn it once and amid the Easter holiday and COVID quarantine, there was a 55 degree drop in temperature overnight as well as snow in Golden, CO. I had to take my dog out for a walk so I pulled out my Mammut, threw it over a cotton t-shirt and braved the elements. I stayed warm, dry and protected against the storm and frigid Spring temperatures. I couldn't be any happier with my Mammut and highly recommend it!!

Extremely Warm, Lightweight
- Familiarity:
- I returned this product before using it
This jacket is the lightest down piece I have ever worn. It feels like you don't even have a jacket on at all, yet still is extremely warm. I've used it as mid-layer on bitter cold days at the mountain and it is amazing. It also packs very small. I love the depth of the pockets and seamless zipper design on the side pockets, which is very stylish. For how much down is packed in this thing, you would be surprised on how light it is. If your looking for a very lightweight down jacket, I would highly recommend this one. It's definitely a must have for me for warmth, and weight.
