Why We Like The Vanguard Alpine Touring Boot
We like La Sportiva's Vanguard Alpine Touring Boot about as much as we like a solid powder day. This boot combines La Sportiva's solid ski touring performance with the comfort and stiff support needed to gobble all the powder in an empty bowl. Not only is its construction light on our feet, but it's also one of the few with an environmentally thoughtful design. Pebax's new bio-based TPE comes from a wide range of renewable resources. Add La Sportiva's stiffest flex, a roomy last, and a thermo-moldable liner, and we're set to soar powder overhead all day long.
*Manufacturer Disclaimer: The Vanguard is designed to the specifications for ISO 9523 standards, and the certification is in process. ISO 9523 specified Alpine Touring Boots meet the compatibility specifications to work with Sole.ID and MNC bindings in addition to Tech/Pin bindings.

Need better testing and quality control

I put 40 days or so on these last year and it’d be faster to list what didn’t break. I really wanted to like them. Great mobility, relatively light, pretty stiff. But I am tired of fixing them, I need reliable boots. Buckles broke multiple times (first time they told me they hadn’t heard of this issue and sent me a new one, then next week ran into a LaSportiva tester on Mt Hood who told me it was a known problem lol) Foot beds broke (how?? Glued them in place) Ski mode to walk mode lever broke (glued it back together) The cord on the lever shredded in a few outings (replaced with non garbage cord and it lasted whole season) Now the membrane that seals the gap between the cuff and base of the boot ripped, Not sure I can repair this one, and honestly don’t even feel like trying to warranty them.

Needs improovment

While these boots have a ton of potential to be a really solid boot, it needs improvement. I went ice climbing 3 days on them and 4 days backcountry skiing on small tours and the buckles wire completely snapped off and the circle part on the ankle that holds the whole boot together also fell off so one side of the boot was able to lean inwards while walking up hill. Basically the boots were useless after a week of owning them. They are very easy to get on and off your foot with the shell design and are very comfy and are very stiff, I loved the boots fit and warmth, I'm bummed I had to return them because I thought these boots would of been perfect for me but were not durable enough, maybe I had defective pair. I ended up with the Scarpa Maestrale RS Alpine Touring Boot - 2022 and absolute love them, they are perfect!
