Why We Built The Backcountry Cottonwoods GORE-TEX Jacket

We seek out the storm in confidence in our Cottonwoods Jacket. Inspired by the 500+ inches a year of snow we typically see in our Cottonwoods Canyons—Salt Lake City’s backyard—this hardshell is made from highly durable 3-layer GORE-TEX material that can handle our biggest lines, all while keeping us warm and dry. This robust outer layer isn’t as lightweight or stretchy as our Rustler Jacket, but the protection it offers for plowing through Pacific Northwest snow or making the most of pow days is unparalleled. The segmented sleeve design delivers the freedom we need for pole-planting and tightening up our bindings. And we built in a bevy of thoughtful features inspired by our Gearheads to keep us dry and charging all winter long.

Comfort cuffs lack elasticity

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Comfort cuffs are very narrow and have no elasticity, decreasing the functionality of the jacket.

a VERY GOOD Quality jacket

I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I wear small, but purchased M so I could layer it. This jacket is awesome.

Not made for a quiet walk in the woods

Familiarity:
I returned this product before using it

After a lot of online searching, I was thrilled to find this jacket, it had all the features I was looking for and was super cute on top of that. The jacket arrived today and I am so sad. Material is extremely stiff and it is so noisy - like ridiculously noisy. I wish I could upload a video of me putting the jacket on and off. This is not the jacket to take for a nice hike in the woods or on a trail - forest critters will run in fear at the sound of this jacket. I am returning - so sad

a Solid B

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

I bought this jacket for my daughter (13) and she loves it... Except that the zipper is terrible.. It is impossible for her to zip. You have to pull on it very hard. Even When I help her, it's hard to move.

too stiff and boxy

I really wanted to like this jacket as I liked a lot of the details. But the fit was too boxy and the fabric too stiff. And I have a boxy build! Returned.

Almost perfect

Familiarity:
I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions

I love this jacket. I don?t find it as stiff as some of the reviews say. The hood is a little big even for riding over a helmet but I don?t use it so that doesn?t bother me. The only downside I can find is that the zippers are a little stiff/ hard to open. I ended up returning it only because I got one as a gift.

Solid Jacket

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

This jacket has tons of functionality. It has a lot of storage pockets, big pit zips and a nice snow skirt. This jacket feels as if it were made for the resort but can function in backcountry as well. The jacket feels stiff but durable so it holds up nicely if you’re moving through tree’s. The cut of the jacket unfortunately does not allow too much extra room for movement. I am a snowboarder and I ordered a size Large. I did have a hard time bending over in the jacket and cotton woods pants to put on my bindings and felt a little restricted when I cross my arms over my chest. This probably wouldn’t affect a skier that much but I would prefer the jacket to have more stretch. The internal sleeves are soft with thumb holes but the sleeves appear to run a little short. I love the color of the jacket, and the big helmet hood is a nice touch. I feel like this jacket design has a lot of potential in the future should backcountry make a few shape adjustments. I was given this product by backcountry to test, and this is my honest review.

This is basically a super still ski shell. It is super stiff. Not what I was looking for...returning.

Material

Really wanted to like this jacket because of the pictures and their sleek look however once received, I realized the material is that of a carhartt jacket and not what you want for mobility on the mountain. Sent it back.

Sleeves are short

Familiarity:
I've used it several times

Overall its a decent jacket and I see a lot of potential. I'd separate my thoughts into a few categories. Size - Id give size a 2/5. Generally it came smaller than i was expecting. And the sleeves are extremely short. So putting my arms forward it came real tight around my back. Felt good around the waist with the powder skirt. Material - For material id say a 5/5. Kept all the snow out super well, kept me at a decent temp, and didn't let any snow build up in any area. The pockets are the best part. super deep and waterproof pockets. And a giant mesh pocket on the inside to hold goggles, gloves, etc. Comfortability - Have to give comfort a 3/5 just because it came smaller than expected. If I had gotten the right size I would be able to fit more layers under the jacket. And the thumbholes for the sleeves would put strain in between fingers due to them being so short. Mobility - again with 3/5. The sleeves just made the jacket restricting: when bending down to tighten boots. It would stretch really tight across the back, then the sleeves would ride up my arms. -Kacy I was given this product by back country, but this is my own personal opinion.
