The ALPS Mountaineering Westgate 3 Tent keeps us comfortable and our gear organized on multi-day adventures in the backcountry. Since we can't control the weather, ALPS designed the Westgate with three poles to create a strong and sturdy framework that combats surprise storms. Its weatherproof fly and factory-sealed seams also keep out inclement weather to keep you and your gear dry. This fly securely buckles to the tent and is easily adjustable to keep the weather at bay. Two vestibules shelter backpacks and camping gear from the storm while internal mesh pockets and a gear loft help keep your small essentials close at hand.

Two humans + a dog - car camping success
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
I got this tent because our 2 person tent was getting a bit tight with 65 lb. dog. I really liked the full rain fly so accidental touching of the side of the tent didn't let water in. The tent seemed sturdy, it was easy to put up, and we liked the stuff holder that clips into the ceiling. It is a bummer that we couldn't find a footprint anywhere, so we used a tarp instead. This is listed as a backpacking tent, but it is a bit heavy. However, if you split it up between 3 people that would spread the load out. We didn't camp in a downpour but it was drizzly and we stayed dry. Overall very glad I got it.

My 3rd ALPS tent
I haven't used it camping yet, but put it up to see how it went up and to get inside and check out the space. It goes together pretty easy. I do recommend putting it up before you go out with it because if it's raining or getting dark, you don't want to be slowed down getting it up. I got my wife to get inside it with me so I could check out the room and it's perfect for two medium to large adults. I'm 5'10" and 165 lbs. and she's nearly as tall as me. There was room for us and some gear but the vestibules are large and will hold everything we would need to be covered. I will probably use it for camping with a couple of my grandkids at a time. Perfect for that. It will easily hold myself and two children. My experience with my other two ALPS tents is that they hold up in rain and wind and are a great value! I expect this one to be the same.

Decent Tent for the Price
- Familiarity:
- I've used it several times
This tent comfortably fits me, my wife, and my 60lbs dog. The only downside is that it packs large, is heavy, and takes time to set up/disassemble. Good beginner backpacking tent for the price.

Fared well in extreme weather
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I just spent a weekend in driving wind & heavy rain. This tent help up extremely well in the sustained winds of 20-25 mph. Ventilation was good as I kept both roof vents open the entire time with no water entry. My only complaint was that I did get water seeping through the zipper on the fly. I could see that the 2 small velcro tabs were not enough to hold the flap in place, so water blew under the flap and seeped through. Compared to others I was camping with, this tent did really well though. One other note. This is not a 3 person tent. You likely could just barely fit 2 sleeping pads into it. Plenty roomy for a single camper though.

Tear in roof on second use
- Familiarity:
- I've used it once or twice and have initial impressions
Overall, this is a very nice tent. It is light and extremely fast and easy to assemble and take down (with or without the rainfly). The color coded poles are intuitive and easy to use. I have used it with and without the rainfly. The rainfly is excellent. Ventilation on the tent is very good. The cargo loft is small, but useful for things like keys, phone, etc. On my second outing, I noticed a small hole in the roof. It looks like it is wear related, but I don't see how that is possible on a second use. I assume I got a defective tent, as the overall quality of Alps products is very good. Very dissapointed.

5 years and still going strong
- Familiarity:
- I've put it through the wringer
I?ve used this tent in Desert, alpine, and costal areas. For 5 years it?s been a go to. Assembly is painless. I really like the poles, they are a pretty sweet color and after hundreds of nights they have never bent, and still operate flawlessly. The size is perfect for 2 people with an air mattress. We still have room at our feet for our dog and the HUGE vestibules offer plenty of room for gear Storage. If you?re sleeping on Pads, I think there is sufficient room for 3 people. I?ve never felt in moisture on the interior walls which is my # 1 requirement. Nothing is worse than waking up to everything being damp. I?ve used it on a few multiday backpacking trips, it?s a bit heavy for one person but if you can split the load across a 2 or 3 people it is very nice. The stuff sack included is awesome. I?ve never struggled to get everything back in and the compression straps are still going strong. If I had to offer any criticism, it would be the lack of storage pockets inside the tent. There are a few but I?d love a few more options. All and all, I wouldn?t hesitate on buying this tent again. I?d recommend it to anyone looking for a do it all tent for a great budget price.
