When it comes to fast-and-light overnighters, technical ascents in the alpine, or a bit of both, we call on the Deuter Freescape Pro 38+ SL Backpack to carry our gear. Don’t be fooled by its minimalist exterior—the Freescape is an extremely versatile pack well-equipped to tackle everything from backcountry ski and splitboard objectives to modern alpinism and more traditional mountaineering. The padded shoulder straps and hip belt help keep everything comfortable when fully loaded with gear, and a frame sheet further increases support when saddled with a heavy load. When venturing into the backcountry for fresh tracks, we throw avalanche safety gear in the front pocket, and when we head out ice climbing, we throw a set of ice tools in the front straps and lash a rope to the top of the pack via the dedicated rope-carry strap. Simply put, this pack does it all.
